The tale is of a very ill child at Auchernach whose recovery from a coma coincided with the playing of the pipes. On hearing of this story, James McHardy the great piper, wrote the tune Auchernach Laddie. James McHardy He had been a member of the Lonach and had been a piper to Queen Victoria (and had a falling out with John Brown!). He is buried in his native Corgarff and had composed his own funeral lament in the period before his death. There is apparently a book written by one of his daughters, "My Father the Bagpiper".

The Author Ken McHardy was born on the Candacraig Estate in 1927, son of Dandy Wallace's Head Gamekeeper and lived there until moving into Aberdeen around the end of the war. Some of his school day reminiscences are in David Northcroft's initial volume (of an intended trilogy) called Grampian Lives (Vol 1; Rural childhood's 1900-50) . There are some reminiscences about the Balloch School
