5 Castle Newe

Castle Newe
This painting may well have been commissioned by Sir Charles Forbes the 1st Baronet of Newe, after the building of the castle in 1831. It is in the style of the previous three paintings of Strathdon before the building of the castle which were possibly commissioned in the 1790’s possibly by John Forbes, Sir Charles’s uncle when he returned from India and when he started buying up the estates in Strathdon. It may have been by the same artist.

The Castle was built in 1831, around the old house of Newe which was built in 1694, Castle Newe was a beautiful building with a hint of Indian architecture. The house was built for the Forbes family and was full of treasures especially from the Indian Continent. Unfortunately, the house was demolished in 1926 and the contents sold off and distributed to the family.
