Return to Introduction

Sir Charles Forbes the 5th Baronet was a keen photographer and between about 1910 and 1920 he took black and white and coloured glass plates of Castle Newe and the life and people in it. Sir Charles himself developed the colour process he used.

Picture 1
In the House of New just below a window at the top of the staircase is a wooden cabinet
At the bottom of the cabinet are drawers containing glass photographic plates.
Picture 2
The lid contains 5 glass filled frames and under that is a full-length mirror.
Picture 3.
If a glass photo plate is put into one of the frames the light from the window projects an image on the glass for viewing. Thus, the slides can be viewed without the need for and electric light.
Picture 4.
This is a plate in original condition. As can be seen some of the picture surface is damaged and therefore the pictures in tis collection have required some digital restoration. Click to see restored picture
