An email from Claire Farquharson in Brisbane about her relatives from Strathdon, started a search into the Farquharson family history and raised a number of questions: why did a NE farm labourer’s son attend a boarding school and became a butler in Belgravia, then emigrated to Australia, why a family member became a resident at Buckingham Palace and finally the identification of family photos.

This album with a selection of pages relates to the Farquharson family history and the family photos.

This page outlines the Farquharson Family History

Clare sent the flowing emails:

“My husband’s great grandfather John Farquharson (Photo John Farquharson) emigrated to Australia in 1882. His parents, Robert Farquharson and Helen along with his sister Betsy, are buried in the Strathdon churchyard (close to the church). We have been there once and planned to go Scotland later in the year but this will not be happening now with this wretched virus closing everything down.
There is something that you might be able to help me with however. We have inherited a little photo album that they must have brought out with them. No names were in the album but they are taken by photographic studios based in Aberdeen and one in Aboyne. I am gradually scanning them and I wondered if you put them on your site perhaps someone might recognise them as their relatives.

John and all his living siblings emigrated to Australia so they must be people from the “old country”. Most are photos of older people. Would you be willing to do this?
Also, John’s birth entry says that he was born at Faichlaw/Faichla? This is or was a small croft near Strathdon. Do you know where it is?

Please find attached the relevant photos from the album. I have included one of John Farquharson ( or JB Farquharson as he was known in Australia. Would you believe that there were two John Farquharsons living in the same small town of Birregurra in Victoria? JB was the butcher at one stage, so he was referred to as John Butcher Farquharson - JB for short.)

He was the butler at 44 Belgrave Square in London before he and his wife set sail for Australia - hence he looks pretty fancy in the photo. He was a local councillor/magistrate in Birregurra and all-round character it would seem. We would love to know how this transformation from the little boy born in a croft house in the Scottish Highlands took place but perhaps we'll never know.”

Margaret was born to Robert Farquharson and Mary whose maiden name was McDonald.
Margaret was born in Strathdon, Aberdeen on 15 Sept 1825.
She married Captain John E. McNamee and migrated to Jamaica, with he and several children around 1860, I believe.

Apparently other Farquharson and McNamee family members were already established in Jamaica.
Both apparently passed away circa 1863.John McNamee may have been with Scotland Yard and somehow associated which the quelling of some insurrection in Jamaica or the Mesquito Coast (Belize).
The several children of John and Margaret were taken in by the Eryes(sp?) family. Son Charles married Elizabeth Eryes and settled around Christiana, Jamaica, W.I.

A couple questions on local geography if anyone would happen to know.

The modern OS map places Aldachuie where the Lost Gallery now stands. But Roy's Military msp places it down by the Water of Nochty as 2 settlements- West and East Aldachy(right where Glen Nochty is types on the modern OS). Are these all one place or gas Aldachuie/ Aldachy moved?

Secondly Roy's Military map has an Upper and Nether Tolduquhill. The modern OS makes no distinction between Upper and Lower. However the earlier Roy's map matches up to my gtx5 Grandfather's gravestone (Duncan Allanach) which has that he was a lay farmer in Upper Tolduquhill. Just wondering where Upper Tolduquhill was in relation to the farm that now stands there. Thanks

There seems to be some confusion/misinformation about a couple of Robert Farquarsons with a daughter Margaret that I hope I can clear up.

The Robert Farquarsons of Tolduquhil (@1780-23 Feb 1859) married Diana McHardy (1781-1848) sometime before 1806. Between 1806 and 1819 they have 6 children listed in the OPRs for Strathdon. Two more are identified in the census records. Robert also had a child with Isobel McKay in 1833. The first child found for Robert and Diana is Margaret born 17 April 1806. She married John Bremner, a widower, in 1844, and died 15 Jan 1885. Her death cert states she is the widow of John Bremner, her parents names as Robert and Diana McHardy, and she died at Toldaquhill. The informant was her nephew Peter Nicol, a son of her sister. Therefore this Margaret is not the woman who married John McNamee, Policeman, and died in Jamaica 1847.

The Robert Farquharson and Margaret McDonald noted were from the Corgarff area. Their daughter Margaret was born 27 Sep 1825 at Delnadamph. She cannot be the wife of John McNamee, Policeman, either as she is too young if she is of the family of McNamee found in the Jamaican records (she is said to be 35 when she died 18 December 1847).
