Second on the right up Belnacraig hill, the cottage has recently gone under extensive extension and renovation

Balnagowan (for Baile na Gabhainn). Town of the cattle-fold.
Baile, town; na, of the; gabhainn, gen. of gabhann, cattle-fold,
or
From the Gaelic "baile" meaning a homestead or a village and "a'ghobhainn" meaning "of the blacksmiths".

There is little record of the occupants of the cottage in the past although it was occupied by Sandy Shand possibly up to the 1950’s

My Dad Sandy Shand came to Balnagowan in1909 when he was 1year old and lived there till he died in 1971
