Smiddyford

Research into the history of Smiddyford is hampered by the problem of differing names. Over the years the site has been known as, Roadale, Roadside, Smith Ford, Smithyford and now Smiddyford.

See Picture of Smiddyford today

The present cottage of Smiddyford was built about the 1900’s and the old buildings opposite are on the site of the previous cottages. On the 1850 map (above) there were three other habitations further up the road from Smiddyford and on one map this area is called Balnacraig as opposed to the nearby Belnacraig (Noted in 1927 map). More recently the road up beside Smiddyford was known as Back Street.

It is difficult therefore to state in which cottage the residents of Smiddyford stayed.

There is a report of a ‘Roadside Inn ’ in the early 1800’s.

Mary Ann Kellas who became Mrs Pirie, is reported to have said in an interview on her 90th birthday:

Her Grandfather, John Kellas, owned the roadside inn there, and also she’ll tell you with a smile, “His own still which he kept in the hills. It must have been well hidden because he was never caught. Maybe that was because he always kept a stone greybeard of whisky for the gauger when he called.”

A ‘Grey Beard’ is a stoneware drinking jug with a long neck; decorated with a caricature of Cardinal Bellarmine (17th century)

Glenbuchat was famed for the illicit distilling of whisky; Glenbucket whisky was reputed to be as good as Glenlivet over the hills. Glenlivet became legitimate and flourishes to this day, but the Glenbucket trade was stopped by the excisemen. When they appeared in the district, the news was flashed through the glen and the ‘worms’ were hidden away, until one day (so the story goes), disguised as women, they surprised the distillers at work.

The first taxes on whisky production were imposed in 1644, causing a rise in illicit whisky distilling in the country. Around 1780, there were about 8 legal distilleries and 400 illegal ones. In 1823, Parliament eased restrictions on licensed distilleries with the "Excise Act", while at the same time making it harder for the illegal stills to operate, thereby ushering in the modern era of Scotch production.

At one time there was obviously a Smithy there and many of the occupants have an occupation of Blacksmith.

Hi Amanda

Many thanks for your request. I may have linked your family tree to the Cabrach Kellas family noted on the Kellas Kellas Memorial Page No 778

Please contact me via the site email (on the 'home' page) with your email address and I will forward the family tree for you to check.

Thanks for the information here. I am descended from William Kellas (1790) and John Kellas (1817) (through William Kellas, later) blacksmith at Bridgend in the Cabrach) both of who lived at Roadside. I had not heard of the possible inn at Roadside mentioned in the article about Mary Pirie - that was very interesting. However, I think she may have been slightly confused at the time about one thing - her grandfather was William Kellas, not John, (unless it is me who is confused) so it might have been he who was the illicit distiller. Another quick point. I note you have one variant of the name as "Roadale" - if this is from the 1841 census I think this is just a badly written and squashed "Roadside".

I am probably on the wrong email address but wondering if there's a way some one from this site may be able to put me in touch with the Amanda who posted this a few years ago:

Greetings from New Zealand

I am searching for any information on James Kellas (1846 - 1932) and his wife Mary Jane Kellas nee Glennie 1837 - 1927). They lived at Cottown Farm.

Mary Jane Kellas nee Glennie is my great aunt.

Would value any information in particular photographs.

Leslie, I think this is correct.....

John Kellas (1817 - 1867), his wife and children are at Roadside entry number 4

Next door at entry number 5 is John's widowed mother Elizabeth Kellas (nee Farquharson (1791 - 1863). Her husband William Kellas died in 1848 I think.

Also there are her son Alexander (1826 - 1865) and daughter Margaret (1815 - 1880). Mary McKenzie is the illegitimate daughter of Margaret, baptised on 5 Feb 1845 in Glenbuchat. The father was a William McKenzie of Belnaboth in Glenbuchat. Mary is listed as niece but she was in fact grandchild of Elizabeth.

Ditto the other child on the census, William Roberston, who was another illegitimate child of Margaret's. William was baptised on 4 February 1850 in Glenbuchat. He was the son of Alexander Robertson "a young man".

The third child, William Bremner, is listed as a foster child. I'm not sure of the exact connection, but William was the son of Thomas Bremner and Jessie Begg, born in Towie parish, but baptised in Glenbuchat on 19 Dec 1850.

Thank you Simon. I so appreciate your response. Yes, I mistyped Mary McKenzie residing with John Kellas and meant Elizabeth. How very interesting that these children are the illegitimate children of Margaret and grandchildren of Elizabeth. Are these records part of the Strathdon Vital Records? I am actually trying to solve another riddle, which as you'll see when I explain it - was why I was interested in this that you've answered. I am searching for the correct ancestry for a Mary McKenzie born 1824 (I think, to James McKenzie and Ann Grant. Am not absolutely certain that is our Mary) but our accurate sources begin with Mary's marriage to Peter Mann in Banff 4 Jun 1843 and their first child James Birnie Mann born in Banff, 12 Aug 1844. 7 additional children follow, the third of which is my second great grandmother, Mary Mann Ronald. We have birth records stating the mother to be Mary McKenzie for 4 of the children including my 2 gr. grandmother. However, Mary Mann Ronald's death record says her mother was Mary Kellas. We wonder if they are the same person? or Two different individuals? There is a relationship somehow between Kellas and McKenzie and we don't know what it is in this case. The difficulty of course is to know which of the two lines to follow beyond Mary Mann - James McKenzie and Ann Grant or a John Kellas and Margaret Reid (which my Grandfather says is the correct line and for which he provided no sources or explanations.) I'd be most grateful if you had any additional knowledge about the McKenzies earlier than this grandaughter of Elzabeth's. Perhaps these liasons had gone on for quite sometime and our Mary adopted the name of Kellas briefly? Lots of speculation and appreciative of any opinion you might have. Thanks you, Leslie Clark
