Archaeological Notes

Situated 290m NW of the farmstead of Ryntaing (NJ32SW 1.00), there are the ruins of two sheep houses set on the NE and SW sides respectively of a narrow yard or enclosure some 6.3m broad. The NE building measures 10.9m from NW to SE by 3.2m within dry-stone walls 0.6m thick and up to 2m high at the SE end. This gable has largely collapsed but the lintelled entrance is still intact. A second entrance, in the SW side, where the wall has been reduced to a height of about 0.6m, gives access to the yard between the buildings. The SW building measures 11.4m from NW to SE by 3.1m within dry-stone walls 0.75m thick and 2.6m high at the SE gable, where there is a small square aperture set above the lintel of the entrance. The remains of a disused sheep-dip lie adjacent to the SE end of the SW wall.
