In August 2022 I was delighted to meet with Jennifer Sande from North Dakota who is a direct descendant from William Kellas who was born in Glenbuchat in 1790.

William Kellas’ father, also called William, had moved from the Cabrach and it seems that William junior appears to have been born in Glenbucket in 1790. The family were weavers and lived at Roadside Glenbucket, which is today known as Smiddyford.

William’s son James was a blacksmiths apprentice

In the 1861 Census James had emigrated to the city of Huron in Canada. Here it was noted on the 1871 census that he could not read or write. He had a son James Forrest Kellas and it was noted that at the age of 12 he could not read or write. This may explain the change of name spelling. In the 1859 registration of James Forrest Kellas’ birth, the name is recorded as Kalles. And in the 1880 USA census the name is noted as Kollas. This may be due to the family lacking in literary skills and thus the census recorder may have had difficulty with a Scottish Dialect and recorded differing spellings. The family name therefore became Kalles.

In 1880 James his wife and son Alexander are noted to be in Cass Dakota Territory USA and he is working as a farmer

James had a son, James Forrest Kalles who in 1880 is recorded as being in Trail, Dakota Territory. Perhaps as in Scotland young men left home and became farm workers in other farms.

James Forrest Kalles has a son Earl Victor, who was born in Pearce Washington in 1894. James died on 28 Oct 1943 in Sitka, Alaska, United States

In 1920 Earl was in Lewis, Washington and in 1930 Chelan, Washington, He died on
November 13, 1981 in Hoquiam, Gray’s Harbor, Washington, USA

Victor had a daughter Emma M Kalles who was born 21 Feb 1918 in Lewis, Washington
She Died on 10 Mar 1973 in Washington. In 1941 Emma married Clyde E Shields and had a son Edward Earle Shields born in 1942

Edward married and one of his children is Jennifer Sande nee Shields.
