On the left is John Callam b 1870 - d 1931, in later life (c late 1920 s) - carpenter at Eastburn, formerly of Newton, with his apprentice at an unidentified location. He moved into Eastburn Cottage (built by laird JWB in 1904) and erected the carpenter’s workshop on the opposite side of the road from Eastburn cottage. The Callams were several generations of estate carpenters in Glenbuchat.

John Callam (left) at his workshop at Eastburn (John Stewart collection c 1910). The figure on the right is possibly his younger brother (by 15 years) and employee - Alex Callam - also a carpenter (1911 census). A country carpenter turned his hand to all skills including estate joiner, wheelwright, millwright, coffin maker etc.
