Jean Farquharson

Jean Farquharson was a well-known lady who lived alone at Badenyon Cottage and which has been known since then as Jean’s house.

Jean’s father came from Toldaquhill a croft in Nochtyside just next to Glenbuchat where her grandfather Charles has crofted.

Jean was born in 1890 at Corriebrek in Glen Nochty not far from Toldaquhill

In 1891 Census the family are in Velore Cottage Auchernach and by1901 the family had moved to a croft at Badenyon.

The name Velore Cottage is of interest although it is not known which cottage on the estate was called this. The Owner of Auchernach Estate, Lt General Nathaniel Forbes had been in the Army of the East India Company and in charge (as a Lt Col) of a hill fort at Vellore in India. In 1806 some of the native troops rebelled and 15 European Officers and 119 European Soldiers killed. Col. Nathaniel Forbes, who lived outside the Fort, accompanied by a number of unarmed men belonging to the 1st Battalion of the 1st Regiment, took possession of the hill fort and waited there until British authority was re-established in the main Fort.

No doubt the name of the cottage relates to this incident.

Coronation Parade ?1911

The photographs above purport to be of Jean Farquharson on a parade in Aberdeen possibly in 1911 for King George V's coronation. There appears to have been a two-part parade.one general for the coronation and the other to celebrate the battle of Harlaw.
The Battle of Harlaw was a Scottish clan battle fought on 24 July 1411 just north of Inverurie in Aberdeenshire. It was one of a series of battles fought during the Middle Ages between the barons of northeast Scotland against those from the west coast.

The photographs were kindly provided by Ken Cruickshank and Ken writes about them:

“I remember being told the lady in the parade was Jean Farquharson of Badenyon in her younger days and that she worked in Aberdeen. She was selected as Queen of ............ I have no record of who gave me the originals or the parade or details. There was a detailed newspaper report - BNPA - on the 1911 Coronation Parade at the end of July of that year listing who played the main historical characters. I did not see her name listed. Also, the drapery on the Union Street columns does not match the confirmed image of that event passed to me by the librarian. Perhaps another parade. I have no more details.

I checked a newspaper report of the coronation celebrations for 22nd June 1911 (The Aberdeen Daily Journal Friday 23rd June 1911). There was a very large pageant loosely based on the battle of Harlaw, which again fits the costume of the lady. However, all the people representing the characters in the pageant are listed and Jean Farquharson's name does not appear to be there.”

To clarify if this is jean the last photo is a collection of three photos purported to be Jean for comparison.
