From the 1845 Statistical account of Strathdon
Fairs.—-There are five fairs or markets held in the parish during the summer. The principal one is John's Fair, for cattle, sheep, and horses. Three are small cattle markets, and the remaining one, Andermas Fair, at the end of harvest, for the sale of meal, fodder, &c.
From Folk Tradition and Folk Medicine in Scotland: by Dr David Rorie
and, the biggest of all, " John's Fair " held at Heugh-head in the month of August, in honour of which we always had a school holiday. For a local fair it was a large one, attended by many people from the low country as well as from the glens, with numerous cattle and sheep and not a few horses for sale.
